A refrigerator needs its own plan before moving day. The crew can arrive ready to load while the appliance is still full, connected to water, or too wide for the next kitchen doorway.
For a Houston household move, sort out the appliance, access route and food separately. This checklist helps you prepare without assuming that every refrigerator—or every moving quote—includes the same work.
Start with the model number and the moving quote
Photograph the model label and find the manufacturer’s moving and installation instructions. Keep that information on your phone rather than packing it in a box.
Tell your mover whether the refrigerator is freestanding or built in, where it sits, and whether stairs or a tight turn are involved. Ask specifically who will disconnect the water line, remove doors if needed, and reconnect the appliance. Arrange a qualified appliance professional when the work is outside the agreed moving service.
If you rent, confirm that the refrigerator is yours to move. Do not discover at loading time that it belongs to the property.
Measure the whole route, not just the kitchen opening
Check the refrigerator’s dimensions against doorways, hallways and turns at both homes. Include handles and the space needed to maneuver. Share photos of narrow spots with the moving team before the appointment.
For an apartment move in Houston, check the building’s elevator and loading arrangements too. Our moving-truck parking and elevator checklist covers those access questions.
Empty, defrost and dry it before loading
Follow your model’s instructions rather than a blanket “unplug it 24 hours before” rule. Preparation time varies. Make a plan early enough to empty the freezer and deal with any ice or water without rushing.
Whirlpool’s preparation guidance calls for removing food, turning off the ice maker and water supply as directed, disconnecting power and water, and cleaning and drying the interior. Removable shelves and bins need protection so they cannot shift during transport. Use your own appliance manual for the sequence and timing.
Do not pull a refrigerator out while its water line or power cord is still connected. If the shutoff valve or connection is unfamiliar, stop and arrange help instead of forcing it.
Make a separate plan for cold food
A short trip across Houston can still involve time spent loading, driving, unloading and waiting for the refrigerator to cool again. Do not treat the unplugged appliance as your food cooler.
Use up what you can beforehand. Keep remaining perishables in a properly chilled cooler and use a thermometer. The FDA recommends a refrigerator temperature of 40°F or below. Foods requiring refrigeration should not sit at room temperature for more than two hours, or one hour when the air temperature is above 90°F. If you do not know how long food has been too warm, discard it.
Keep transport and restart instructions together
Plan for upright transport. GE Appliances’ moving instructions explain that transport position and restart guidance depend on the model; several refrigerator types must remain upright. Do not assume laying one down is harmless or that every unit can be plugged in immediately on arrival.
At the new home, follow the manufacturer’s installation and settling instructions. Let the refrigerator reach a safe temperature before returning perishable food. Keep your cooler available until then.
Your final refrigerator checklist
- Model instructions saved and appliance ownership confirmed.
- Refrigerator included in the quote, with preparation responsibilities agreed.
- Both access routes measured; stairs and tight turns disclosed.
- Food removed; ice and water dealt with; interior clean and dry.
- Loose parts protected and transport plan checked against the manual.
- Cold-food storage and arrival setup planned.
