A washing machine needs more preparation than an empty drum and a moving blanket. Water can remain inside, and the parts that protect it during transport depend on the model. A little planning before your Houston move can help you avoid a last-minute search for hardware or an appliance technician.

Use this checklist to organize the work. For the actual draining, disconnection and transport preparation, follow your washer’s instructions and arrange qualified help when needed.

Start with the model, not a generic packing tip

Find the model number and download the manufacturer’s owner’s manual and installation instructions. Look specifically for moving, relocation or transportation guidance. Save a copy where you can find it after the boxes are packed.

Also confirm whether the washer is yours to move. In a rental, check with the property manager before disconnecting an appliance. If it is stacked with a dryer or mounted on a pedestal, tell your mover at the quote stage rather than treating it as a freestanding washer.

Check the transport-hardware requirements early

Front-loading washers commonly need model-specific hardware to protect their suspension during a move. The instructions are not interchangeable.

For example, Whirlpool’s front-load moving guidance calls for new transport bolts and recommends an authorized service technician install them. GE’s front-load guidance describes reinstalling the specified bolts, spacers and clamps. Check what your exact model requires before assuming the hardware in an old parts bag is sufficient.

Top-loaders are different, too. GE’s top-load moving instructions describe different transport protection for different designs. Do not assume every washer uses the same bolts, or improvise with unrelated hardware.

Leave time to drain and dry the washer

Finish laundry before the moving crew arrives so there is time for the manufacturer’s preparation steps. That may include shutting off the water, unplugging, disconnecting and draining hoses, and removing residual water as directed.

Do not remove a pump filter or open a service panel based only on a general online checklist. The access point and procedure vary by model. If a valve is stuck, a connection is leaking or you are unsure how to proceed, arrange appliance or plumbing help rather than forcing it.

Keep the correct hoses, approved transport parts and instructions together and clearly labeled. Follow the manual’s directions for securing loose components; do not leave them where they can snag during handling.

Give your mover the laundry-room details

For a Houston apartment, the route may include a narrow laundry closet, hallway turns and a reserved elevator. A house can have a tight utility-room doorway or stairs. Describe the route at both addresses, not just where the washer currently sits.

• Washer model and whether it is front-loading or top-loading.
• Stacked setup, pedestal or other installation details.
• Stairs, doorway restrictions and elevator access.
• Who will disconnect, prepare and reconnect the appliance.
• Whether the required transport hardware and servicing are arranged.

Before the first load at your new home

GE and Whirlpool’s moving guidance calls for upright transport. At the destination, follow your model’s installation instructions before operating it. Required transport hardware must be removed, the machine properly installed and leveled, and connections checked for leaks. Do not start a cycle simply because the power cord is plugged in.
