How to Measure Furniture and Doorways Before a Houston Move

A sofa can fit comfortably in your new living room and still get stuck on the way there. Before a Houston move, measure the furniture and the route from the loading area to its final room. A few photos and labeled measurements give your mover something useful to assess before moving day.

Start with the largest pieces

Make a short list of the items most likely to cause trouble: a sectional, tall cabinet, wide dresser, dining table or large bed frame. Record each piece’s full width, depth and height, including fixed arms, feet and decorative trim.

Check the manufacturer’s instructions for parts designed to come off. Do not assume a sofa’s back or legs are removable just because they look separate. Note the model when you can, and photograph the whole item as well as any connectors.

Measure the clear opening, not the door size

Open each door along the route and measure the usable space the furniture will actually pass through. A labeled door size does not account for the open door, hinges or projecting hardware. Record the opening’s height and narrowest clear width.

Also measure the space immediately beyond the doorway. Furniture may clear the frame but have nowhere to turn because a wall or staircase is directly opposite it. Ethan Allen’s furniture-delivery measuring guide highlights corner clearance and obstacles such as low ceilings and decorative molding.

Walk the whole route at both homes

For a Houston apartment, include the building entrance, corridor, elevator and apartment door. For a townhome, pay particular attention to stair landings and the turn into an upstairs room. At a house, check gates and the path to the entrance you plan to use.

  • Hallways: record narrow points and space around corners.
  • Stairs: check clear width, landings and headroom along the route.
  • Elevators: measure the door opening and usable interior, not just the lobby entrance.
  • Final room: leave space to turn and position the item, not only a footprint where it will sit.

Crate & Barrel’s delivery measuring guidance also emphasizes room to rotate furniture and ceiling clearance around stairway turns. One doorway measurement alone cannot confirm that a large piece will fit.

Send a simple measurement note with your quote request

You do not need a professional floor plan. Label the locations clearly, use the same units throughout and attach a few well-lit photos. For example: “Sofa: width × depth × height. Front entrance: clear width × height. Tightest point: landing turn.” Fill in your actual measurements rather than relying on a similar item’s online dimensions.

Tell the mover which floor each item is on, whether an elevator is available and whether your building requires a reservation. Our Houston parking and elevator access checklist covers the building-access details that belong alongside your measurements.

What if the fit looks close?

Flag it before the crew arrives. Ask whether the item needs an in-person assessment, manufacturer-approved disassembly or a different route. Do not force it through, remove building fixtures without permission or assume a balcony/window route is included.

Measurements are a planning aid, not a fit guarantee. Protective wrapping, hand clearance, weight and the shape of the item also matter. If the route is uncertain, agree on a plan before moving day.

Plan your Houston move with fewer surprises

Request a moving quote from Bantu Mover and include your bulky-item list, photos and access details. Tell us about tight doorways or stairs early so we can discuss the move with the right information.
