A desktop computer needs more preparation than an empty desk. Before your Houston move, protect both the equipment and the files you will need when you reconnect it. The simplest plan is to back up first, organize the cables, and pack the tower and monitor separately.

Back up before you disconnect anything

Make a current backup of important files, then check that you can open a few of them from the backup. Keep an external backup drive with your personal essentials rather than in the same box as the computer.

Photograph and label the connections

Take a clear picture of the back of the computer and monitor while everything is still connected. Label matching cable ends before removing them. A small label such as “monitor to computer” is more useful than guessing from a pile of similar cords later.

Shut the computer down fully, rather than putting it to sleep. Disconnect the power and accessories. Coil cables loosely and place them in a separate pouch or small box, along with the keyboard and mouse. Keep screws from a removable monitor stand in a labeled bag.

Choose packaging that supports the equipment

Use the original fitted packaging if it is still sound and complete. Otherwise, choose sturdy boxes and protective supports sized for each piece. The computer should not slide around inside its box, and the monitor screen should not bear the weight of other items.

FedEx’s computer-packing guide recommends sturdy boxes, cushioning and foam corners for desktop equipment, with double-boxing guidance when needed. Follow your manufacturer’s instructions for your particular computer and display, especially if you are shipping rather than moving them locally.

Pack the monitor separately from the tower. Remove its stand only if the manufacturer’s instructions permit it. Keep tape off the screen, and do not tuck loose plugs or tools against it. For a custom-built PC, large internal components, liquid cooling or a glass case, get transport advice from the builder before packing. Do not improvise by stuffing material inside the computer.

Plan the carry from your Houston home

Think through the route before moving day: desk to doorway, stairs or elevator, then the loading area. If your apartment has a shared loading space, keep the electronics indoors until they are ready to be carried out rather than leaving them waiting on the curb.

Keep boxes dry and avoid leaving equipment in a parked vehicle. Tell the moving crew which boxes contain the computer and monitor, and identify where they should go in the new home. Reconnect without rushing

Unpack onto a stable surface and look for visible damage before connecting power. If equipment is damp or has experienced a major temperature change, follow its manufacturer’s guidance before switching it on. Use your cable photo to reconnect the setup, then check the monitor, keyboard and internet connection before your next work session.
