A mattress is awkward to move, easy to scuff and something you will want ready on your first night. Before your Houston move, plan its protection, the route out of the bedroom and where the bed will go at the new home.
The most important rule: follow the instructions for your exact mattress. Foam, hybrid and innerspring models do not all tolerate the same folding or storage position.
1. Identify the mattress before packing
Find the brand, model, size and thickness. Tell your mover whether you also have a box spring, platform frame or adjustable base. A king mattress and a powered base are separate pieces to plan for—not just “one bed.”
Check the manufacturer’s moving instructions before folding, rolling or compressing anything. For example, Sealy’s storage guidance calls for a flat, top-up position, warns against extended upright storage and says not to vacuum-seal its mattresses. Do not assume a mattress that arrived compressed can safely be compressed again at home.
2. Choose protection that fits
Use a mattress bag sized for both the width and depth of the mattress. Remove sheets and blankets first, and follow the mattress maker’s care directions. Do not enclose damp bedding with it.
A cover helps keep the surface away from dirt during handling; it does not turn the mattress into a waterproof outdoor package. Keep it indoors until it is ready to be loaded. If rain is forecast for your Houston move, discuss a covered loading plan rather than leaving it beside the driveway.
Ask ahead whether your mover supplies mattress protection or expects you to have it ready. Confirm the same for a box spring and any separate topper—do not assume packaging is included.
3. Check the route at both homes
Measure the mattress and check narrow bedroom doors, stair turns and elevator openings. Our furniture and doorway measuring guide helps you plan the route before moving day.
For a Houston apartment, tell the crew about stairs, the floor number, the distance from parking and any reserved elevator window. Clear loose rugs, cords and small furniture from the path. Do not force a mattress around a tight corner or attempt an awkward stair carry alone.
4. Keep bed parts together
Photograph the frame before disassembly. Put the hardware in a labeled, sealed bag and keep it with the bed’s other parts. Set aside the manufacturer’s instructions for an adjustable base.
Confirm who will disassemble and reassemble the frame before moving day. Keep clean sheets and pillows accessible so you can make the bed without searching through every bedroom box.
5. Plan loading and arrival
Agree on the mattress’s transport position with the mover using the manufacturer’s instructions. Do not use it as a cushion for heavy furniture. The Home Depot’s mattress-moving guide also advises against carrying a mattress on a car roof.
At the destination, have the bedroom space clear. Remove the moving cover when appropriate, inspect the mattress and follow its care instructions before replacing bedding. For storage between homes, confirm the recommended position and a suitable dry indoor space first.
